So I’m sure I’m not the only one that’s been dying to try one of these Cro-Doughs (Cronut). In fact I was so desperate I had to ‘tweet’ it in order to find out. Rumor had it that Rinkoff Bakery was selling them, by the next week I was already down there. Try not to dribble on your keyboard as you read this *You’ve Been Warned!*
A Cro-Dough is a croissant ‘slash’ doughnut hybrid. Cro-Dough is the British version of the American Cronut (both the same thing, different names). These are extremely popular in New York with queues that can take a few hours outside some of the bakeries. However, lucky for us guys as these haven’t quite hit the same popularity…YET. The Cro-Dough demand is growing very quickly, so I suggest you go to Rinkoff Bakery asap before everyone knows about them, resulting in an hour wait queue too!
Rinkoff Bakery was established in 1911 by Hyman Rinkoff, who was a baker from the Ukraine. The small bakery is hidden down a side passage off the main road in Whitechaple You can easily miss it like I did, my tip is walk down the side passage next to a building signed ‘O’Leary Square’. The Cro-Doughs cost £2.75 each, well worth your money as they sure aren’t small treats.
Cro-Doughs come in three flavors, raspberry, apple crumble and vanilla custard. Unfortunately they sold out of apple crumble when we got there (damn it) so we settled on one raspberry and custard. I personally loved the vanilla custard, it was so moreish and the vanilla custard was so creamy, pure divine.
I mean…just LOOK at this beauty posing!
In terms of their texture, they really do live up to their name. I didn’t think they would actually taste a little like a doughnut and a croissant, but they do! Although the structure seems quite heavy, they are surprisingly light and delicate in texture.
Have I persuaded you yet?…. Of course I have! (According to the Evening Standard you can also get these from Wild & Wood Cafe, Cocomaya, Aston Bakery, Duck & Waffle, Ayres the Bakers and Kooky Bakes) But I say head to Rinkoff and support the over 100 year old bakery!
So, go down to Rinkoff Bakery and have your first Cro-Dough, it’s well worth it!(I was not asked to review Rinkoff Bakery, this post is purely my own and done through my genuine curiosity of Cronuts/Cro-Doughs)
